The Town of Medzev was founded by German colonists, who were invited to the country after the Tatar invasion in 1241 by the Hungarian King Bela IV. From its earliest beginnings to the first half of the 20th century it was inhabited by people of German and Flemish origin. These people gradually became an ethnic group called Carpathian Germans and folk “Mantake”.
